Is a static website good enough?

In today's world NO! It is believed that just having an online presence is enough. Having a static website means that you can direct your leads there so that they can check out what's on offer. It means that if someone types in your business name you will come up on a search engine. But these days that is not enough. While these are valid reasons to have a website they are not the ones that are going to make you new leads and bring you new business.
Lets take for example a person who is in the business of selling furniture. They have an online catalog/website that was launched two years ago and hasn't been updated since. The chances of their website coming up in a search engine when someone is searching for Furniture in their local area will be slim to none.
So that's why they need a website that is not static. A website that is dynamic and changes daily is the website that will come up on the first page of search engines provided that close attention has been paid to Meta descriptions and Keywords.
It is possible to change your website from a static to a dynamic site easily, if you like the look of your existing website but would like the power to be able to update yourself every day then Loewen Media Webdesign Galway offers this service for a very reasonable fee.

Thinking outside the box with webdesign

This is an example of a design that breaks the mould and is highly efficient, and an enjoyable experience to browse.

This one has the most amazing flash but I'm not sure that it works as a store. Can we step so far out of the box that we lose sight of userability?
I have to admit the site does entice you to purchase and is an enjoyable experience. Do you think though that users might find it too much going on and become frustrated?

Choosing a domain name for your site

The domain name for your site: Choose one that has what you do or sell in the title. Make sure it is easy to remember and to spell. Don't make it too long. For example lets say you make dresses. You could have dressmaker.com or if that wasn't available you could have dressmakeryourname.com. They say that hyphenated names do well on the internet. If you live in Ireland and you have a business name registered you might want to book a .ie domain as well. You have to fill out forms to do this one and it's more expensive. The reason people do it at all is that searchengines knows by your ip address where you live in the world and will bring up local websites first. So if you have dressmaker.com and dressmaker.ie the dressmaker.ie will come up first when local people search. The .ie isn't so important if your service or product is used from anywhere in the world. If you have a local service or business then I would recommend booking a .ie address.
Also there is more of a chance that the name you are looking for is available on a .ie domain even if it the .com is already taken. That's because only someone living and owning a business in Ireland can set up a .ie domain. Whatever way you look at it you will have to pay something for booking a domain name.
Hosting is different and if you want your site to be live on the net you will have to buy hosting space. http://www.loewenmedia.com provide cheap reliable hosting. You pay for that yearly. You will need to know if you need a SSL certificate. If you are selling something on line and taking credit card details you will need SSL and a payment gateway. Paypal doen't require an SSL certificate but customers have to leave your site and go to Paypal to complete their purchase. However for start up we recommend Paypal, at least until you are selling enough to justify the expense of setting up an SSL and a payment gatway. Realex supply a very good payment gateway. You will also need an ecommerce merchant account to operate through Realex.

Start up business package

For anybody starting their own business venture this package kills 4 birds with one stone.

Sean and I found from speaking to people who are just starting out in business for themselves and setting up a website that they often feel overwhelmed. They are skilled at what they do but the haven't a clue where to start with the domain registration and the business name registration and all that side of things. So we decided to put together a package especially for anybody setting up their new businesses.

For an only €250.00 we will set up a business registration with CRO, domain name registration and web hosting, and a basic website . The basic website includes a professional looking home page with your logo and current and easily updated information, an about us page and a contact us page. You can choose the colors and typeface and have two images on each page. We offer lots of additional business services at low low prices, such as: Logo design, brochure design, packaging development, business card design, business blogs, web marketing advice and services, web support and technical services and much more.

While I am here I just want to say a few words about something I have noticed. That is that while people who set up businesses are often multi-talented they can still get very stressed when it comes to IT. They make a lot of expensive mistakes. It is also becoming apparent to me that people who are in business and who aren't IT literate or who seem unwilling to learn are becoming increasingly difficult to work with because they tend to draw a blank when it comes to understanding the basics of email and the internet. One of our aims is to remove the fear that creates these blocks and open up that world for people. Take them by the hand as it were and give them them some really practical help with blogging for example and then once they start to see some results their fears are replaced by excitement.

Updating your website

How often do you need to update your website to maintain optimum efficiency?
The answer is every day. This may stun some people but it's a fact.

Let me explain. You see, web crawlers (computers) working for Google and Yahoo look for fresh content. They run around the world wide web every day searing and looking for something new. Something that was not there the day before. When they find it and it's unique content it get's listed. If your websites content is not new and fresh it will get pushed further down the listings every day. We crawlers search for key words, they are not able to read the normal text that we are ale to read. So we need to add new content and make sure that the key words are automatically added or that we add them manually.
What can you do if updating your website means you need to know HTML, PHP, XML and CSS and you don't know how to do this?
The short answer is that it is going to be time consuming, stressful and expensive.

If you have a simple website you will need to learn html to be able to update it. You could do a course in dream weaver and that will mean that you will have to install some expensive software on your computer. It will take about 6 months to learn the basics. Even then, things can go wrong and you will need to have a back up handy incase you mess up. Most people hire a professional, often the person who built their site, to update it. The going rate is around €100.00 per incident. Often it's difficult to get intouch with your designer and it's sometimes even harder to get them moving on something that you needed done yesterday.

Is there a better solution?
Yes! Loewen Media build a website that allows you to update your website several times a day. It takes about as long as it takes to write and send an email. You can add key words simply and you can ad images and other stuff too like youtube videos, audio, flash so easily. You don't need to do a course and we give you the training. It takes most people around an hour to pick up the basics and be able to update their site themselves. We offer free support for the first thirty days and after that you can pay a subscription for support for only €25.00 per month. Most people don't ever need this type of support.

The bottom line is that if you have paid a lot of money for a website and you are not updating it every day it may as well be in a dark corner because people are not going to find what you sell by searching Google unless they know you are already there.

Marketing is something we learn...

...as we go along. It is something that some people have a natural ability for. In short if you understand people then you will probably understand the basic principles of effective marketing. I learned the hard way first.
I used to go to the farmers market on a weekly basis for 7 years. I learned from dealing with people what made them purchase. I learned how to sell my products. I learned that getting to know the customer is often the first step to selling to them. When I was at the market I used to love to get the opportunity to sell stuff for other people. If someone went for lunch and they asked me to look after their quilt stall or their pottery stall I would always try to sell at least one item by the time they got back, no matter how quiet it was. Selling food, which was what I did seemed too easy, you just made people feel hungry and you were away. However selling a hand turned earthenware pot to someone who hadn't come to the market to buy such a thing was a real challenge. It went sort of like this.

Here's me at the stand...buzzing with the excitement and anticipation of the sale I was just about to make. I watch the people passing. Some people brush past quickly on an obvious mission and in a rush. Other people walk by with hands in their pockets, bored and disinterested. Interspersed with these two groups are what I liked to call "the active browser", the person with their neck craned slightly, slightly animated and with their eyes wide and alert.

I would always be moving while selling at a stall in the market. Never standing still.
The way I figure is this: People out looking for something to buy (even those who are unaware that they need anything) are in a way like the hunter...they see things that are moving, things that catch the eye.
So there I am jumping up and down, or swaying from side to side, or more likely rearranging the stuff on the stall, and I am always looking around me, watching to catch someones eyes. (Like a deer in the headlights! no! only joking) they stop and I mirror them. If they smile I smile back. If they don't I don't. That's really important.

I say "Hi" .
I like to get to the point of what I am selling quickly. Get it out of the way straight away. Tell them "I am selling these amazing hand turned pottery cups and plates, aren't they beautiful?" ...(I go on, telling them the story behind the product), "The guy who makes them is a genius and he makes them all by hand."
I hold up a piece of work for the person at the stall to admire...then pause.
They will often ask a question or make a remark about the piece. Some of the people passing start to slow down and watch or listen. Some people stop and come over, feeling relaxed because there is another person talking to me. It's important to keep your focus at this point because there is a tendency to pull back a little so that you can address the greater audience. This is not a good idea for it can mean the breaking of rapport with the person you were initially speaking to and often they will walk away. It can also have the effect of making the other people feel ill at ease and they will quickly follow.
Hold your focus and your rapport with the person you are talking to, (at the same time keep an eye out for sticky fingers, if you know what I mean).
By holding your rapport with the first person you are talking to while there are other people gathering has a few good effects. The first is that the people who are gathering to eaves drop and have a peek like to do just that, it makes them stay relaxed when you just carry on talking as if they weren't there. It gives the person you are talking to the feeling of importance because they have your undivided attention. You look so busy, look at all the customers around the stall and you are taking the time to talk to just them.
This raises their self esteem. It often happens that while you are talking to the first person about the amazing man who makes the pottery, an observer has picked up on the jist of what you are saying and they pick up a piece of pottery to purchase it.
Note: It's really important to have the price clearly visible on the item for people like this. They will often pick up the piece and buy it right then and there.

After this happens, because rapport with the first person has been naturally broken it will be easier to begin to include the customer who just made a purchase into your conversation.

I believe: The way to sell in the market is actively, don't waste time. Have confidence.

Anyway, the main thing is confidence. An inner knowing that you are going to make a sale. But there is something more, something that comes naturally.
That is: Striking rapport with the person.
People like to buy when they feel things are real. It doesn't matter if the REAL is "tangibly real" or "perceived real". So instilling a feeling of realness is very important and it needs to come across loud and clear in what you do.

I did a course in Business and Marketing and a course in Neuro Linguisting Programming and Hypnosis. I loved the B and M course, excelled in every area of the course accept income tax.

...These are my thoughts.
